Highlights
The Learning Optimizer: an Overview of IBM Db2 AI for z/OS Robert Catterall, IBM
Choosing the optimal access path for a query, and doing that in a few milliseconds or less, is no easy task. Even with the most sophisticated query optimizer on the market (IBM invented cost-based SQL optimization), Db2 for z/OS doesn't always choose the best-performing access path for a query. Why? Largely because Db2 has had to act without information - specific to YOUR environment - that is critically important with regard to effective access path selection.
Up until now, that is. The brand-new IBM Db2 AI for z/OS is going to fundamentally change the access path selection story in a positive way. This session will provide an overview of what IBM Db2 AI for z/OS is, how it does what it does, and its potential to substantially improve query execution performance in diverse Db2 for z/OS environments.
Revival Of The SQL Tuner Sheryl Larsen, BMC
The pool of DBAs with SME knowledge of SQL tuning has shrunk dramatically, while the number of SQL statements needing attention has grown and will continue to grow. Db2 performance tooling can help identify what needs to be tuned. But what do you do then? This presentation will help fill the skills gap by reviving the role of an SQL Tuner. Specifically, you will learn what access paths are good for what types of queries, what indexes are best, and how to change the Db2 optimizers mind.
AMI (Automated Mainframe Intelligence) Sheryl Larsen, BMC
Introducing AMI, the new face to BMC’s mainframe solutions. AMI enables you to automatically manage, diagnose, heal, and optimize mainframe systems without manual intervention. AMI consists of modern analytics technology and built-in machine learning capabilities that will give you predictable and transparent insight into your mainframe environment. AMI is the autonomous driver you need for your mainframe.AMI can help you with the entire range of challenges you’re trying to tackle on the mainframe today. Imagine monitoring thousands of metrics and having the system make decisions in real-time to ensure your mainframe is always running at peak performance. Imagine automatically finding and fixing issues before they become problems that impact your business. We’re here to help!
Let Me Make This Clear: Explaining Often-Misunderstood Db2 for z/OS Concepts and Facilities Robert Catterall, IBM
Some aspects of Db2 for z/OS technology are plain as day; others, less so. Questions I get from Db2 users worldwide have highlighted for me things that a lot of folks--even very experienced Db2 people--get wrong. In this session, I'll try to bring clarity to often misunderstood areas of Db2 for z/OS technology, including SQL statement zIIP eligibility, table space partitioning, high-performance database access threads, page-fixed buffer pools, Db2-managed archiving, hard and soft data set open and close, thread reuse, and in-memory database objects.

Thank you, Earl W. Dugan
